Women’s Participation in Elections in Bangladesh:

Monitoring and Exploring the Challenges and Way Forward to an Equitable and Democratic Transition in 2026 National Election and Beyond

Aarshi Trust, in partnership with the BRAC Institute of Democracy and Governance (BIGD),
is implementing the project which aims to:

  1. Analyze the barriers faced by women political candidates to participate in the political process, in order to identify areas of intervention to address these barriers.
  2. Conduct systematic assessment to examine how women political candidates, aspirants, and women activists (youth activists, public intellectuals, trade union activists, and women’s rights activists) are represented, discussed and targeted in the online sphere by technologically facilitated gender based violence (TFGBV).
  3. Assess women voters’ political preference and decision making factors, to better understand barriers to voting behavior and informed participation

Funded by the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), Aarshi Trust is responsible for the online monitoring study which aims to systematically investigate the online dimension of women’s participation in politics and elections in Bangladesh. To address this, Aarshi is implementing a structured online monitoring system which will  generate empirically grounded evidence that identifies patterns of abuse, discursive frames, amplification dynamics, and coordinated campaigns that target women in politics. This evidence will inform policy recommendations to strengthen institutional responses by the Election Commission, political parties, ministries, and digital platforms.
